(Immediate Release) Approaching the blossoming arts season of the early autumn, this September, City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) again proudly presents ‘Jumping Frames 2022’.  Exciting programs under the idea ‘Body Non Body’ includes screenings, exhibition, performance, industry forum and more. The festival runs from 1 September to 2 October 2022 at Broadway Cinematheque and Eaton HK.  Tickets are now available at Broadway Cinematheque Box Office, Broadway Circuit Online and Poptickert.hk.

This year, ‘Jumping Frames 2022 – Hong Kong International Movement-image Festival’ have changed its name from “dance video” to “movement-image”, bringing dance and films over 60 local and international movement-image.  “Any stimuli that moves your body and soul, is dance. Thus, in the same way, not all moving images are movement-images. Any moving images that affect the viewers and when their bodies react to the visual, are considered movement-image, body or non-body.” Said by Yuri Ng, Artistic Director of CCDC. This change of name opens up a new chapter for the Festival.

Opening Program: “All That is Happening”

A conversation between four local woman filmmakers, this world premiere is a co-commission by ‘Jumping Frames 2022’ and ‘Eye Catcher’, a project under the Renaissance Foundation.  Festival Director, Elysa Wendi hopes to tap into the characteristics of author centric nature of essay film format, focus on questioning the vulnerability of all possible de-construction of body.

A collection of award-winning films by renowned directors around the world

While we continue advocate to broaden the scope of “performance” and “video documentary”, this year, presenting the idea of “Body Non Body”, the festival aims to explore body and mind as a transcendental vessel and passage way to process our profane and sacredness in the realm of de-construction and exposition, while looking into the body and its profound existence and form.

The screenings topics cover ‘International Feature Film Selections: Body Narratives’, ‘Artist Focus’, ‘Body Archive: Trajectory Re-imagined for Hong Kong and Taiwan’ and ‘Competition Selection’.

International Feature Film Selections: Body Narratives

Award-winning feature films include, a special 35mm film screening of Tsai Ming-liang’s The Wayward Cloud, which won Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Achievement, The FIPRESCI, Alfred Bauer Award, ‘Berlin International Film Festival’ in 2005, Germany; Solo Dance by critically acclaimed director Lee Li-shao, was nominee of Best Documentary at the Golden Horse Awards, Taiwan, last year (Hong Kong Premiere); Narrated by legendary performance artist Marina Abramović, with score created by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, The Ferryman is a lush visual and choreographic journey in between performance, dance and ceremony, led by new rising star in the international dance scene, Damien Jalet (Hong Kong Premiere); Híbridos, The Spirits of Brazil by French director Vincent Moon, was IDFA 2017 Official Selection among others important film festivals  (Hong Kong Premiere).  A Body in Fukushima directed and performed by dancer and choreographer, Eiko Otake was New York Museum of Modern Art’s Doc Fortnight, Official Selection, 2022 (Asia Premiere). Two socially relevant documentaries, Before We Go by Jorge León depicting three terminal patients participating in a performance project before death and Dance of Time, covering stories of Joseon laborers who traveled from Korea to Cuba, and their descendants after a decade.

‘Artist Focus’ series is a special program featuring 4 directors hovering between filmmaker/ dancer/ choreographer/ theatre practitioner/ visual artist or all of the above.  They are Song Joowon (South Korea), Danièle Wilmouth (USA), Cheuk Cheung (Hong Kong) and Nao Yoshigai (Japan).  A very important edition to the festival this year is ‘Body Archive – Trajectory Re-imagined between Hong Kong and Taiwan’. The program relates to the historical narrative of body between Taiwan and Hong Kong through the dialogue between Taiwanese curator Joe Huang and Hong Kong curator Emilie Choi Sin-yi. The selected films since 1990s illuminates the capacity of bodies as the existential agency to reinvent our memories and relationships to our cityscapes and chronicles.  Seeking original and cutting-edge works through an international open call, this year, 24 short films are shortlisted from nearly 500 entries around the world for the Open and Hong Kong students category.  Audience for the Competition Programmes will be eligible to vote for the ‘Jumping Frames Audience Award’, while other awards and prizes selected by the final juries’ panel will also be announced on the last day of the festival screenings.

Expanded Programme – Unfolding the unlimited possibilities of ‘Body Non Body’

Apart from the screenings, the festival will expand its programmes to exhibition, performance and industry forums to create an all-rounded movement-image experience. Expanded space, Body Dis-ordered co-curated with Joseph Chen of Eaton HK is an exhibition that explores the dysfunction of both human body and the mechanical/ algorithmic system, and how they collide with each other in the language of video, installation and performance.  Participating artists include, Ray LC (Hong Kong), Joey Holder (UK), Jun Bokyung (South Korea), Jun Hyejoo (South Korea), Tsui Hou-lam (Hong Kong), Tung Wing-hong (Hong Kong) and Omsk Social Club (Germany).  The exhibition runs from 1 September to 2 October at Tomorrow Maybe, 4/F, Eaton HK, free admission.

CCDC undertakes to blaze the path of contemporary dance scene with extraordinary performances representing contemporary Hong Kong culture.  Counter of Occurrences is a new attempt of ‘Jumping Frames 2022’ expanding beyond film festival usual practice.  Living artwork created through incidental performance by Florence Lam and Ka-chun Hui, their bodies are the vessels that draws audience closer to the screen or become the moving image themselves.  Their performances may happen anywhere, anytime and in any form during the festival.

Since 2004, ‘Jumping Frames’ is committed to promoting the intersections between performance making and moving image, cine-choreographic interventions and the body.  “So they say, ‘Be proud of one’s name and stand by it.’ This saying may not be true to contemporary art. We change our name this year to express our views of the moment. Adapting to trends, growing with our audience, we keep redefining our festival, and will be happy to start afresh every year.” Shared by Yuri.
