Press Release (29 September 2017)

City Contemporary Dance Festival 2017

15 exciting contemporary dance productions in Hong Kong

A feast of Asian dance creativity in November

City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) has been a key player and witness of the vigorous development of contemporary dance in Hong Kong for 37 years. In addition to producing new choreography and performances, CCDC is also actively exploring international platforms to help the city’s contemporary dance industry. This year, CCDC is excited to launch the inaugural City Contemporary Dance Festival 2017 to showcase quality dances from East Asia and introduce leading dance artists from Hong Kong and Asia to international theatre and festival presenters.

Contemporary dance companies and choreographers from China, Japan and Korea and other East Asian countries are invited to take part in the festival from 21 to 26 November 2017. Fifteen exciting contemporary dance programmes will be staged at the Kwai Tsing Theatre, Yuen Long Theatre, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity and Hong Kong Arts Centre. Tickets NOW available at URBTIX.

At City Contemporary Dance Festival’s press conference, CCDC Artistic Director Willy Tsao introduced the festival and its wide-ranging programmes, together with Helen Lai, the city’s leading dancemaker and choreographer of the opening programme Testimony as well as a host of upcoming choreographic stars from the festival’s Focus Hong Kong programme – Wayson Poon, Gabbie Chan, Pewan Chow and Lai Tak-wai. Two key regional collaborators of the festival – Shinji Ono, Director of Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No.1 and Lee Jong-Ho, Artistic Director of Seoul International Dance Festival (SIDance) – also introduced their festivals as well as their roles in the inaugural City Contemporary Dance Festival.

Having presented overseas tours and participated in international dance festival regularly in the past decades, CCDC have built extensive networks in the dance industry internationally. In 2015, CCDC established "HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform" with Seoul International Dance Festival (Korea) and Yokohama Dance Collection (Japan) whilst linking up with Noism1 and Daegu Contemporary Dance Company to jointly create a touring network. These experiences and connections form the foundation of City Contemporary Dance Festival 2017.

City Contemporary Dance Festival 2017 is comprised of two main parts. The first part are performances and showcases, including “Performances of Asian Contemporary Dance Companies” – a series of five programmes performed by professional companies including Noism1 (Japan), Daegu Contemporary Dance Company (Korea), Beijing Dance/LDTX (Beijing) and Shanxi Huajin Dance Troupe (Shanxi) alongside CCDC; “HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform” – a collection of seven programmes from Japan, Korea, the Pearl River Delta, Shanghai and Taiwan; and “Hong Kong Focus”, which introduces seven local choreographers and their works. The second part of the festival is the “DanceX International Dance Network”, over a hundred influential international curators are invited to attend a diverse range of performances at the festival and to attend activities such as seminars to facilitate artistic exchanges during the festival.

As the host of City Contemporary Dance Festival 2017, CCDC will present the revival of its seminal production Testimony by Hong Kong’s leading choreographer Helen Lai as the festival’s opening programme. Veteran stage actor Lee Chun-chow returns to this pioneering dance theatre which deciphers the music of Shostakovich.

There are many Hong Kong premieres during this six-day dance festival, including Cold Arrow – Game of Go (Weiqi) (Beijing), NINA – materialize sacrifice (Japan), The Encounter of Confucius and the closing programme Moon-looking Dog I saw the elephant (Korea). Together with the black box programme by emerging choreographers, the festival weaves a rich and comprehensive tapestry of contemporary dance.

City Contemporary Dance Festival 2017 is financially supported by the Hong Kong Special Administrative region and organised by City Contemporary Dance Company. A total of 15 programmes will be presented between 21 and 26 November 2017 and over 200 local and oversea artists and curators are invited to take part.
