Distance

“Absence makes the heart grow fonder” is a common saying. The story of Jack and Jackie is the best example.

This is the first time the two of them living apart after getting married for two years.

Jack’s parents, who live in Canada, would spend their Christmas in Hong Kong,

So he would stay with them for a couple of weeks in their old flat.

Jackie, as his wife, did not feel comfortable about this new life.

It was darkness that awaited her when she opened the door.

The flat that had been all lively and jolly was empty and lonely.

Jackie thought she would remain unhappy but when she started playing lo-fi music,

And watched her Korean TV drama with potato chips,

She thought, “well, it’s not that bad after all!”

With the free time at night, Jackie took out her diary,

And found out her last entry was from two years go. She suddenly realized,

She had not talked to herself for such a long time.

She lied in the used to be crowded and now spacious double bed,

Rolling from one side to another,

Finally fell asleep with had her four limbs widespread on bed.

She had such a good sleep that night.

With her hubby staying with his parents, they would

Share on their everyday episodes through facetime every night.

The person that used to sleep on the same bed could now only be seen via the camera of the phone, made Jackie realise she had not looked into her hubby’s face for such a long time.

When they were too tired to facetime, they would switch to do phone call. It was like back to the days when they just started dating in high school. Jackie would fall asleep with her fluffy toy and Jack’s voice. How sweet was that.

It might just be the right thing to temporarily live apart.

In three days, Jackie’s husband will move back to their flat.

She started to think, it might be a good idea for her to stay with her parents temporarily sometime later.

It might not be that bad to leave some space for each other, after all.
